How to choose a toothpaste?

Start with what you need most – protection against cavities, stronger enamel, a brighter smile or relief for your gums.
• Cavity protection → fluoride toothpastes and anti-cavity toothpastes.
• Weakened enamel, white spots → remineralising toothpastes, e.g. GC Tooth Mousse, Voco Remin Pro, Orthocare nHAp.
• Stains from coffee, tea or wine → whitening toothpastes: Swiss Smile, Curasept Luxury, Prevdent nHAp, Marvis Whitening.
• Pain with cold or hot food → toothpastes for sensitive teeth.
• Bleeding, irritated gums → toothpastes for bleeding gums.
• Fixed braces or aligners → orthodontic toothpastes.
• On your dentist’s advice → fluoride-free toothpastes or chlorhexidine toothpastes.

Fluoride or hydroxyapatite?

Fluoride is the best-researched ingredient for cavity protection – it strengthens enamel and makes it harder for acids to dissolve. Hydroxyapatite (nHAp) is the mineral that enamel itself is made of; in a toothpaste it settles on the tooth surface and smooths out tiny defects. Some toothpastes combine both, e.g. Voco Remin Pro. For everyday hygiene a fluoride toothpaste remains the basic choice, unless your dentist recommends otherwise.

Which toothpaste for a child?

One that matches the child’s age – follow the age range on the pack. In toothpastes for kids you will find, among others, Elgydium Baby gel with chamomile water (from 6 months), Biosmalto Baby-Kid, fruity Elgydium Kids (3–6 years) and Junior toothpastes (7–12 years). A mild flavour helps keep the evening brush from turning into a negotiation.

Is it worth switching toothpaste?

Yes, when your needs change: during orthodontic treatment, after whitening, or at the first signs of sensitivity. Not sure? Write to us or take the quiz – we will suggest what will work for you.
